Howe Park Shooting Results in 4 People Shot in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood

Law enforcement in Sacramento are working a shooting that took place Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento as deputies were shutting down an unsanctioned gathering of several hundred people.

Before the Gunfire

Deputies were first called to Howe Park just after half past six in the evening after obtaining information of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Soon after, a second call came in regarding a possible physical fight taking place within the park grounds.

A sheriff's airship was sent to survey the area but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Even so, it was evident that hundreds of people had packed into the park without authorization.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Law enforcement personnel began the process of clearing the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and issuing commands over loudspeakers telling the hundreds present to leave immediately. Nearly 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.

Just as the crowd began to move that upwards of 20 gunshots rang out. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Officers at once began identifying shooting victims.

Those Who Were Hit

Altogether, four gunshot victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The four individuals — including a female and three males each apparently in their twenties — were brought to nearby hospitals. Medical personnel stated that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. In a positive development, all four victims survived and were stable.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department provided support and helped care for the four victims prior to hospital transport.

Crime Scene Evidence

The main crime scene seemed to have unfolded adjacent to Cottage Way near unauthorized gathering shooting Sacramento the Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Detectives found additional spent rounds throughout the Cottage Way area. Projectile impacts were identified in the wrought iron fence surrounding the Home Depot store. These findings showed that a second shooter had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area aimed at the Home Depot building and parking lot. The store itself was temporarily locked down during the incident. CSI units alongside detectives kept processing evidence throughout the night.

Suspect Information

Information obtained over police scanner frequencies indicated that a Kia was pulled over in nearby Solano County. Four detainees were stopped and detained. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to return them to Sacramento for investigation. Video that was reviewed revealed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
